Moving Soon? What To Do with Your Old Junk

Packing up for a move tends to bring out all the old junk we never even thought we had! And that’s inevitable, even if you follow a regular sort and donate routine! As we move on from old things to new, the older things get pushed to a corner and eventually become one with the home, only to pop out when you’re packing up everything! As much as everyone would just like to pack up everything and move to a new home, that’s just not possible. The more things you take, the more expensive the moving process becomes, and no one should be moving into a new home with a tone of clutter anyway!

So, keeping all of that in mind, before you make the move, you need to get rid of your old junk! And in this post, we’re going to be walking you through exactly how you can do that!

  1. Sort!

The absolute first thing you need to do when you’re in the pre-move mode, is lay everything out and sort it. This means everything! Go room by room, and lay everything out, and start sorting it. You’re going to have to make piles, piles of stuff that actually matter to you and “sparks joy” that you want to keep, and everything else! You need to know exactly which items actually need to go with you and pack them in their relevant boxes right away, only leaving the pile of things that you’re not going to be taking with you.

  1. Sell the new stuff
Now that you’ve sorted the “takes” and packed it away, it’s time to sort through the things you’re not going to be taking and do another round of sorting, now you’re going to separate the pile of things that are still in new enough condition to sell. These would be clothes and shoes that are either lightly used or brand new with tags. The newer it is, the better price it will sell for! You can list your items on apps like DePop, craigslist or even your own Facebook and Instagram accounts! This is a great way to get rid of the things that don’t spark joy and make a bit of extra cash on the side too! Win-win situation!

  2. Donate what you can’t sell
Next comes the pile of things that you don’t want to take with you, but also can’t, or don’t want to sell! If these items are not super new but are still acceptably usable, you might want to let them have a second chance by donating them! You can donate them to a shelter or to places like the salvation army or goodwill! Before you send them out, however, make sure everything’s washed and cleaned!

  3. Trash the things that need to go
Now you’ll be left with a (hopefully) small pile. These might even include things that seem like they’re still usable but aren’t. Things like bed linens, old medicine, old containers of things, ripped clothing, old brooms, sponges, or other cleaning supplies, and the most important ones, expired or hazardous waste. All of these things need to be thrown away. No matter how good their condition is, what’s gone bad, can’t have a second chance. Not in this case at least!

  4. Call a junk removal company for help!
Even though all of the steps we’ve mentioned above seem easy enough on paper, they might be difficult to deal with if you have a very large home, or have just accidentally (or on purpose) become a hoarder. You might need a little bit of help getting rid of your old junk… in that case, it might be a better idea to call junk removal San Jose, or a junk removal company in your area to come and help sort and get rid of all of your old junk for you!
